Tucked away in the French countryside town of Vermenton, Abbaye de Reigny stands as a stunning testament to history and architectural beauty. Originally founded in 1134 by Cistercian monks, this breathtaking abbey has retained much of its medieval charm, with soaring stone arches, grand cloisters, and lush gardens that transport visitors back in time. Once a thriving monastic community, the abbey has evolved into a magnificent venue that blends its rich past with modern elegance, making it a dream location for couples seeking a timeless and romantic wedding setting.
You can imagine my utter excitement when Julia & Sam mentioned this historical wonder would be the backdrop for their wedding weekend.
As a community manager and a fine art curator Sam & Julia know a thing or two about people and beauty. Their artful tastes were infused with meaning and soul, the very thing that gets me out of bed everyday to celebrate. It’s this very blend, of art and meaning that inspire me deeply to capture photographs that are both real memories and works of art. And it’s why I’ll always encourage a candid, artful approach, focused on real moments, rather than directing you into posed shots for a ‘photo op’ that won’t have any real meaning for you.
From the moment I met with them, it was clear that every detail had been carefully chosen to reflect their personalities and love for connection. The day prior to the ceremony, everyone was in full swing, all helping to set up tables, hang lights, fold napkins and carry the carefully selected wine crates. There’s something to be felt when a wedding becomes a labour of love by literally everyone around you. The love and gratitude in the air was tangible.
As the wedding day came, Julia, stunning in a House of CB gown that felt both modern and timeless, was an absolute vision as she walked down the aisle amongst the abbaye’s gardens hand in hand with her father. Sam’s tearful reaction was a moment I’ll never forget. Their ceremony was heartfelt and intimate, filled with laughter, song, tears, and the kind of love that lingers in the air.
The celebration continued in the abbey’s main hall, characterised by its ribbed vaults and pointed arches, creating a dramatic and historic atmosphere for the reception. The space was adorned with florals in woven baskets, heavy drapery, soft candlelight, and accents of blue and white – a node to the French heritage.
As the evening came to a close, Julia and Sam shared one last dance inside the grand hall, surrounded by the historic beauty of the abbey. The night concluded with a croquembouche wedding cake, a classic French wedding tradition symbolising prosperity and unity, followed by celebratory limoncello shots. Talk about adding all the touches I am obsessed with! The perfect mix of elegance and fun, right to the very end.
If you’re dreaming of a romantic destination wedding, Abbaye de Reigny is truly a hidden gem in France, offering the perfect mix of history, charm, and intimate luxury. A place where the past and present dance together—much like Julia & Sam’s wedding day.
